President’s Message

It is an honor to return to campus for the Fall 2023 as the sixth president of the American University of Armenia (AUA), nearly a decade after my first presidential appointment concluded in 2014.

This expansion is the logical continuation of the tremendous growth AUA has seen since its founding in 1991. Initially housing three graduate degree programs with fewer than 100 students, today our University community includes over 2000 students enrolled in eight undergraduate and eleven graduate degree programs, as well as six certificate programs that enroll hundreds of additional students. With an increasing number of international students, we are delighted to provide a culturally, linguistically, and academically diverse learning experience. The University’s state-of-the-art facilities, highly qualified international faculty, rich English-language library, infrastructure that promotes collaborative research, and various academic programs encourage and facilitate critical thinking, discovery, innovation and entrepreneurship.

AUA is accredited by the WASC Senior College and University Commission and affiliated with the University of California, which means that our students benefit from receiving a U.S.-accredited degree while living and studying in Armenia. Many of our over 6000 alumni pursue international careers, including further studies at universities abroad, and over 70% return or stay and work in Armenia following their education.

Membership in AUA’s growing alumni network is lifelong, enriching former students’ both private as well as professional life and demonstrating to aspiring University students the myriad doors opened by an AUA degree.

Primarily funded through donations to the AUA Corporation by individuals and private foundations, largely from the Armenian Diaspora, the University stands as the most significant contribution the Diaspora has made to its homeland. The Armenian General Benevolent Union, which has supported the University since its establishment, continues to provide support through an endowment specifically designated for the University. AUA is also grateful for the significant support provided by the American government through its USAID American Schools and Hospitals Abroad program.

As a university that is so deeply intertwined with and focused on giving back to our international community, I invite all visitors to the country to include AUA in their list of sights. Come and see the ambitious students who populate our campus with bright, innovative ideas and are paving the way for the advancement of not only our University, but the country and region as a whole.

Knar Khachatryan

Dr. Knar Khachatryan is a professor at AUA’s Manoogian Simone College of Business and Economics, academic director of the Office of Sponsored Programs and Technology Transfer, and advisor to the President on Academic Affairs. Her research focuses on financial inclusion, gender, and conflict economics, with publications in leading peer-reviewed journals. She also leads and contributes to international research projects with partners including the European Union, UNDP, and the Swedish Institute.

Narek Ghazaryan

Narek Ghazaryan is a strategic communications leader with expertise in media relations, branding, and institutional storytelling. He leads AUA’s Office of Communications, the AUA Media Lab, and the communications of the Center for Ethics in Public Affairs. He holds a B.A. in Business and International Management from Menlo College, an M.A. in International Studies from the University of San Francisco, and a certificate in International Law from The Hague Academy of International Law.

Robert Harutyunyan

Robert Harutyunyan serves as AUA’s Information Security Officer, responsible for protecting the University’s information and systems through security policy, monitoring, and staff training. He tracks emerging threats and works to identify the best ways to safeguard the data and privacy of the University, its staff, and its students.

Gayane Tevosyan

Gayane Tevosyan serves as the Administrative Advisor to the President and Director of the President’s Office Staff. Her primary responsibilities include advising the President on day-to-day operations, supporting advancement of the University’s strategic priorities, and managing the President’s Office. She holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Brusov State University and a Graduate Certificate in Translation from AUA.

Tereza Abovyan

Tereza Abovyan serves as the Director of Institutional Effectiveness. She holds an MBA from AUA, is PMP-certified, and has more than six years of experience in higher education, spanning academic administration and teaching, as well as in business consulting. She works closely with University leadership on institutional effectiveness, assessment, compliance, and strategic initiatives.

Lernik Zadoorian

Lernik Zadoorian serves as an Executive Assistant in the Office of the President. She holds a B.S. in Business Management and is a certified International Manager with 12 years of professional experience in executive support, administration, leadership coordination, and stakeholder management. In her current position, she works closely with the University leadership on executive coordination and supports operational aspects of higher education administration.

Astghik Pirumyan

Astghik Pirumyan is an Executive Assistant at the President’s Office. Prior to joining AUA, she worked for an independent local think-tank, assisting in the organization and implementation of non-formal education programs for youth. She graduated from AUA’s BAEC program in 2017 and later earned her master’s degree in Public Administration from the Public Administration Academy of the Republic of Armenia.
