What IS a Sponsored Program?

A Sponsored Program is a funded project or activity with a defined scope, specific objectives, and external financial support from organizations like government agencies, foundations, or corporations. These programs operate under formal agreements with clear terms and conditions, including deliverables, timelines, and budgets, and require accountability through technical and financial reporting. They are managed by the university’s Sponsored Programs, ensuring compliance and support throughout the project lifecycle. Examples include research grants, training programs, and public service initiatives.

Sponsored programs consist of funded projects covering a range of activities including research, teaching, training, and services.

What is NOT a Sponsored Program?

Activities like gifts and donations (unconditional funds), internal university projects, consulting agreements, and fee-for-service activities are not considered Sponsored Programs. These lack the specific terms, deliverables, or oversight tied to sponsored funding.

Mission of OSP

OSP provides AUA faculty and staff with support services related to sponsored programs and compliance

This includes:

  • Support grant proposal development, review, and submission;
  • Award receipt and negotiation;
  • Post-award management support through award closeout.
  • Work with internal and external stakeholders

AUA full-time faculty, research center directors, researchers under the direction of center directors and administrative unit heads (directors and/or managers) are eligible to apply for grants and externally-funded programs. All proposals must be approved by the center Director, Dean, or administrative unit head before submission for AUA`s higher administration review.

The proposal, budget, and other required documents must be submitted to the AUA Legal Counsel, CFO, COO, Provost, and President for review and approval. The AUA Legal Counsel ensures legal terms, the CFO ensures financial compliance, the COO assesses resource viability, and the Provost approves the proposed work to make sure that it is within the academic mission of the University.

The application package for AUA’s proposed work must receive President’s approval before submission to the sponsoring agency. This includes letters of commitment, partnership or intent, and potential involvement in proposals or consortiums.
