Assistant/Associate Professor of English & Communications and Academic Coordinator of AUA’s Media Lab
The College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHSS) of the American University of Armenia welcomes applications for a full-time faculty position in English & Communications at the rank of assistant or associate professor. We are looking for a candidate whose area of expertise is in media studies and/ or communications with a demonstrable research record and agenda. The starting date of this position is July 2024.
The candidate will serve as the Academic Coordinator of AUA’s new Media Lab, set to open in 2024. Made possible by a grant from USAID/ASHA, this state-of-the-art lab includes facilities for video recording, podcasting, editing, and more. Its primary goals are to improve media literacy and promote civil society in Armenia and the region. The Academic Coordinator of the Media Lab will work to shape its initiatives, in close coordination with AUA faculty and staff members, particularly the Chief Communications Officer and the media lab’s Operations Manager. This individual will serve as the main point of contact for all academic related matters. Expectations include designing and leading research on Armenia’s vibrant media landscape, forging interdisciplinary projects with different academic units, fostering partnerships with established media organizations to collaborate on innovative programs, organizing masterclasses, workshops and outreach projects that can help improve and elevate the public discourse.
This position will involve teaching primarily within the BA program in English & Communications but also within the General Education program. The teaching load is six 3-unit courses per year, but some teaching relief will be provided as Academic Coordinator of AUA’s Media Lab, depending on the scope of responsibilities agreed. The English and Communications program at AUA (https://baec.aua.am/) introduces its students to the wide range of literacies needed to analyze complex problems and produce creative work in the mid-21st century. We are especially interested in a candidate who can teach core courses in the program while also developing new upper-division electives in fields that might include (but are not limited to) communications and media studies. The candidate will also pursue an active research agenda in media studies and/or communications, as well as engage in university service.
The successful candidate will hold a PhD in a related area as well as relevant administrative, teaching and research experience. Preference will be given to candidates with experience in teaching non-native English speakers and/or conducting academic duties in an international setting.
Compensation: Compensation is commensurate with university-wide pay scale, qualifications and experience. AUA offers an extensive benefits package to international hires, including a housing allowance and an international travel allowance.
