The legal entity of the American University of Armenia in the United States is the American University of Armenia Corporation (AUAC). AUAC is a California Public Benefit Corporation organized exclusively for educational and charitable purposes under the United States Internal Revenue Code Section 501(c)(3). The legal entity of the American University of Armenia in the Republic of Armenia is the American University of Armenia Foundation (AUAF). AUAF is a foundation (Հիմնադրամ) in the Republic of Armenia.
The principal office of AUAC, and hence of AUA in the United States, is located in Oakland, California. It is closely affiliated with the Regents of the University of California (UC). The UC provides academic and administrative guidance under the affiliation agreement, allowing AUAC to play a role in the planning of curriculum, in the selection of faculty, in the structuring of University administration, and in developing programs in various disciplines.
